Studio Emerline is an atelier and spatial practice exploring environments, stories, and technologies by Emerline Ji.
About This
Studio Emerline is my self-named creative practice.
My name is Emerline. After years working across brand, media, and creative strategy, I developed a strong desire to nurture my more artistic side and to create a separate space to build this identity outside of jobs and traditional careers. In my studio practice, I’m interested specifically in:
Self-led, generative creative processes
Spaces and environments that shape how we think and feel
Narrative as a way of making sense of identity and various mediums
Technologies that actually make a difference and open up possibilities
This newsletter is meant to be sort of a living notebook of my learnings, process, and special projects. By signing up, you’ll receive be receiving my personal essays, things inspiring me, what I’m working on, and more.
Together, they form an archive-in-progress.
More About Me
My name is Emerline Joo-Youn Ji. By day, I work as a brand strategist, writer, and growth consultant. But I won’t bore you with these work details. Instead, here’s a bit about my personal background:
California grown, New York & Seoul built, D.C. based: I was born in Michigan, raised mostly in Southern California, and spent my early adult years in Seoul and New York City. I built my career in NYC and spent most of it in the creative and tech industries. I had the best time and it built the foundation of my adult life. I’ve been living in Washington D.C. since 2023.
Korean American: I grew up with very strong Korean roots. In 2012, I even studied abroad and lived in Seoul. Every few years, I still make my way back to visit family and friends. I speak the language fluently. Being Korean shapes how I view the world in ways that are hard to describe in English.
Education, outdoors, and travel are a part of my DNA: Raised by an archaeologist and educators, I believe that I had quite the academic and eclectic upbringing. National Parks and traveling the world are our family love language.
My “creative career” is non-linear, and more of an ecosystem: The first comment I usually get in job interviews is, “Wow, you’ve had quite the interesting career.” They are intrigued enough to have given me an interview, but not clear where to fit me on the org chart. One of the pros of having a non-linear career is that I can tell my story in new and empowering ways. (I’ve also come to believe that having your own “practice” outside of jobs only makes you happier, sharper, and more competitive in the workplace.)
Spatial experiences and creative ventures are next: While I’ve loved and enjoyed my forays into marketing and strategy thus far, I’m at the beginning of a new chapter. I’ve been strongly interested in building this studio practice to be around my spatial interests and also plan to launch a few indie businesses eventually. Excited to share more as things progress.
